Dear Tenino Community: Good afternoon Tenino School District Community: As you know, we are beginning the Superintendent search process. At the School Board’s direction, a district team will be working to implement this process, which includes opportunities for stakeholder input. Given the current restrictions for in-person events we are providing input opportunities via an anonymous survey. Input will be gathered on these specific questions: What are some of the strengths/unique qualities you see in the Tenino community? What are some of the strengths/unique qualities you see in the Tenino School District? What challenges/issues do you see ahead for the school district? What are the characteristics/professional skills you feel you are particularly desirable in a superintendent? We appreciate you taking the time to participate in this very important process and look forward to hearing from you. Just click on the link below to access the survey. https://bit.ly/TSDSupSearch

Re-Opening Update Letter https://5il.co/m3kh Dear Tenino Families: Thurston County Superintendents met early this morning with the Thurston County Public Health and Social Services Health Officer Dr. Abdelmalek. In the past few weeks, COVID transmissions have risen severely, reaching record high levels. As a result, we need to postpone our in-person hybrid instructional model at Parkside and Tenino Elementary. However, because we can safely provide educational services for small groups and special programs, we are permitted to continue to serve these students at all our schools. Bottom line, we will continue with the remote learning model we began on September 9th. This trend makes working toward the increase of in-person instruction very difficult. That said, we do not want to start the hybrid model, only to shut it down again quickly. We do not want to do that to our students, parents, and staff. Therefore, we are going to delay the start of hybrid instruction until the data and direction from public health shows we can do it safely. I am extremely sorry to share this message to you. I know we were excited to see students returning to school. We were surprised to see the COVID transmission rate change so drastically. The health of our students and staff is paramount, and we know case transmissions have to be low for the in-person hybrid model to succeed. Until we are permitted to reopen, we will continue to plan and prepare for hybrid instruction and be ready to transition to in-person learning when permitted. Thank you for your support and patience as we work together as a community to focus on returning our students to school. We recognize the disruption of the school year has had a significant impact on our students, our families, and our staff. Regards, Joe Belmonte

Tenino School District
Greetings Tenino School District Community, As the Superintendent of the Tenino School District, I have had the privilege to work with a supportive school board, a wonderful community and a professional, student-centered staff who always have the best interest of students at the top of their agendas. My experience in this district has been exceptional. It is for those reasons and others, too many to list, that I have difficulty writing this letter. After a great deal of deliberation, I have decided to close out my 39-year career in education and retire at the end of this school year. I have spoken to the school board about my decision to retire effective June 30, 2021.  It is my hope and belief that the timing of this announcement will allow the district enough time to recruit and select the best possible candidate to lead the district into the future. It has certainly been an amazing ride throughout these past seven years. The Tenino community is amazing, and I am continually impressed by how close knit and supportive people are of one another.  I believe during the past seven years the school district has grown and we have achieved much and become one of the outstanding school districts in Thurston County. Tenino may be small, but we are mighty! I would like to thank the school board who took a chance when hiring me and I will always be grateful for this amazing opportunity. I do not exaggerate when I tell you that my seven years in Tenino has been the joy of my career in education.  I am honored to have had the opportunity to lead this district and grateful to be able to close out my career in Tenino.  In some small way I hope that I have had a positive impact on our children. Warm regards, Joe Belmonte

Dear Tenino Families and Staff: As you know, we are facing an unprecedented public health crisis in our state and world. We have kept our schools open as long as possible, as recommended by state and local public health authorities. We know that in addition to education, schools provide vital support to our communities and that closure will have a major impact on our families. On March 12, Governor Jay Inslee ordered the closure of all schools in King, Pierce and Snohomish counties until April 24. State Superintendent of Public Instruction Chris Reykdal echoed the governor’s urgency in a statement posted on the agency website. “Schools and families throughout the rest of the state should be actively engaging in contingency planning now for potential closures in their region,” he said. Thurston County Superintendents met early this morning and have agreed to a unified approach around school closure. Starting Monday, March 16, our schools will close through Friday, April 24, 2020. Public health officials have advised us that a sustained closure can help slow the spread of COVID-19. Monday and Tuesday March 16 and 17, 2020, school office staff will be available to assist families who need to pick up medication and personal items. We are currently in the process of developing district plans to support students with non-educational services as requested by the Governor and OSPI. Further communication regarding these services will be forthcoming. The Tenino School District will provide regular updates to the staff, students, parents and community via Skyward email, District and school websites and social media. This will include regular updates from local and state health officials. We recognize that this disruption in our normal school year has an impact on our students, our families and our staff. Thank you for your support and patience as we work together as a community to focus on public health. Regards, Joe Belmonte

Dear Tenino Community, I would like to provide you with some facts about Senate Bill 5395 which deals with sex education in schools and is causing much concern. I have read the entire bill and have subsequently met with Tenino School District board members and administrators regarding this issue. Below are the facts regarding the proposed law and the approach the District will take IF the bill becomes law: The facts: • At the time of this writing, SB 5395 has NOT been signed into law. The governor can sign the bill into law, veto the entire bill, or veto portions of the bill. • The bill does not require sex education for elementary students. • The focus for elementary students will be around the development and use of appropriate social skills. • Local school districts choose the curriculum that will be taught. • There is no state mandated curriculum. • Since this has not been signed into law we have not examined or chosen a curriculum to meet the new regulations. Our District’s approach to this issue: • We will not be teaching sex education to elementary students. • The school board and superintendent are committed to a commonsense approach to the implementation of this law. • The choice of curriculum should reflect our community’s values. • Parents will be able to review the curriculum and opt out of any aspect of the curriculum. We will continue to communicate with you when this bill becomes a law. Regards, Joe Belmonte

Dear Parents/Guardians: Welcome back to another exciting school year! As we continue our work together helping all students make positive choices regarding their behavior at school and during school activities, we encourage you to take time to review our updated Students Rights and Responsibilities Handbook which was updated this year to reflect new state rules and guidelines. You will find this on our website at: bit.ly/TSD_Student_Rights_and_Responsibilities As we partner with you to help every student succeed, we spend the first weeks of school reviewing classroom/school routines and procedures, as well as school rules to ensure students fully understand their part in making our schools as safe and productive as possible. Thank you for your support in reinforcing these expectations with your student(s).

FYI...Due to a system outage within WSIPC, (Washington Schools Information Processing Cooperative), Skyward is temporarily experiencing a service disruption statewide. This means Skyward Family Access as well as the ability to post to student lunch accounts will be unavailable until the issue can be resolved. WSIPC understands the widespread impact this will have on district operations and has directed all available resources toward resolving the issue as quickly as possible, but the impacts of the outage may last several more days. We will keep you informed as they continue to secure a resolution. Thank you for your patience!

Traffic and Transportation Alert! Our thoughts are with the victims of the train derailment near Nisqually. Tenino Police have asked us to help notify the community of a likely increase in traffic through the Tenino area due to the Amtrak derailment at Nisqually. Southbound I5 traffic is blocked and being rerouted through Yelm and State Highway 507. This may cause a slight delay in school bus transportation. We will remind student walkers to be extra careful crossing the highway. Please take care while driving.
